Matthew 20:17-34

Renew is the word of the day.  The image selected for the day’s devotion as well as the one I used both had green and some form of water, drops of it here, and in cloud form in my picture.

Renewal is an interesting thing.  In our reading today, the disciples all of them, but James and John, as well as their mother don’t seem to have gotten what Jesus is doing very well.   They have not had their vision of what a Messiah truly is renewed by Jesus, yet.

It would come, they would see what Jesus was up to!  But it will take some time.  My favorite part of our reading today is when Jesus is setting them straight a bit when he says…  “It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant,27 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; 28 just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Then right on cue, Jesus walks by these two blind men begging for a favor too, but this time despite the crowds negative input, Jesus gladly responds.   The asking for places of power and prestige are not what the kingdom of heaven is all about, healing and wholeness, serving the other are exactly what it is about.

When our sight and expectations of greatness are renewed in God’s loving grace, it changes everything!

Where do you need to be renewed?

What does renewal look like to you?
