Combines are good things. But they are not good for seeing where you are going! This old John Deere ended up taking a left up at the stop lights, but it took its time getting there!
Sometimes things that are good are out of place, and instead of doing the job they are intended to do, they get in the way. Think about it how many roadblocks in your life started out as a something good and even necessary. That was what was happening in our lesson from Acts 11. The dietary rules God gave to his people had served a purpose, but now their vision had become obstructed by them. They used these gifts to divide, to separate to “other”. Peter’s vision of what someone once called the meet sheet, coming down from heaven was the way God communicated a broader vision to Peter and the early church.
As we prepare for Christmas, this Advent we are reminded that in Christ “God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life.” May we use this Advent to open up our vision to see what God is doing on the other side of the combine.
