Ya know, I have never thought of laughter as an Advent word, not ever. But after reading today’s scripture Psalm126, the concept is growing on me.
Now, anyone who knows me knows, I love to laugh, I love to make people laugh as well. Laughter may not actually be the best medicine, but it is pretty good stuff! Laughter is often a response to the unexpected, that is why a punch line is so vital in many forms of humor. In our Psalm for today, God’s restoration is so sudden, so shocking that the people are moved to laugh! This laughter is not one done out of hilarity, but because of the incredible restoration of relationship that God offers us.
As we prepare for Christmas, may our mouths be full of laughter when we pause to understand what God has done for us in Christ. Riffing on the Psalm, while we may go out weeping, we carry with us the seeds of hope and planting that seed even in our sorrow we can come home with laughter and joy, carrying the harvest of God’s amazing love for us.
